Basketball Holding Company establishes new basketball club in Dubai
Basketball Holding Company establishes new basketball club in Dubai

The Basketball Holding Company, a controlling joint-stock business organization that manages the Vilnius-based BC Wolves basketball club, has recently founded the "Sandstorm Shooters DMCC" in the free economic zone of Dubai. Said new basketball club has been granted an operating license for commercial activities.

The recently established ball club will compete in the local United Arab Emirates league.

In 2013, seven (7) teams began competing in the UAE National Basketball League. All are owned by the public sector, making the Sandstorm Shooters the first privately-owned club to compete for the championship of the Arabian Peninsula nation.

According to current international rules, clubs registered in other countries or teams participating in national championships of other countries are allowed to play official matches of their championships or international tournaments, such as the EuroLeague or the European Cup, in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or another city in the country only after receiving the approval of the UAE Basketball Federation.

Additionally, to participate in the championships of this country, it is necessary that the joining of a new club be approved by all the other participating clubs. Without permits and approvals, only exhibition or recreational basketball matches can be hosted in the UAE. Therefore, a team from Dubai or another city in the UAE will have to play in the local basketball championship if they want to participate in European club basketball tournaments.

With this in mind, Sandstorm Shooters DMCC has applied to the UAE Basketball Federation to become a member club of the local tournament - the UAE National Basketball League.

According to Andrius Žiauberis, head of the Basketball Holding Company, this is the first big step towards realizing the vision of the company's development.

"One of our long-term goals is to expand the company's operating markets, creating maximum value for the business organization. Therefore, next to Vilnius Wolves, a club is being established in Dubai. All existing and future clubs managed by the Basketball Holding Company will be facilitated from the headquarters in Lithuania according to the back-office principle and standards - a unified player database, common management experiences, sales of consolidated brands, and player rotation between the company's clubs."

"Our strategic plans are focused on Europe and the Middle East regions. Similarly, only on a larger scale, the City Football Group holding company operations, managing more than 10 football clubs in New York, Mumbai, Melbourne, Manchester, Yokohama, and elsewhere," added A. Žiauberis.

At the same time, he assured that the BC Wolves club will continue its operations in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius.

"We want to clarify that the Wolves club will not be moved to Dubai. It will remain in Vilnius and continue to compete in both Lithuanian and European tournaments, having its own separate budget, infrastructure, and administrative resources. Players can be loaned to the new club, and the creation of joint summer training camps cannot be ruled out," said A. Žiauberis.

The establishment of a new club is the first step in the growth of the Basketball Holding Company. In the future, it is consistently planning to continue its development by selling the basketball product to other European or Middle Eastern cities with high purchasing power that do not have EuroLeague teams.

Wolves star guard Rasheed Sulaimon out for four weeks
Wolves star guard Rasheed Sulaimon out for four weeks

The BC Wolves have been bitten by the injury bug and fans will have to wait for about four (4) weeks for the return of the team's leader Rasheed Sulaimon due to a lower leg injury. He got hurt during the match against BC Žalgiris of Kaunas and this made him miss the rest of the game.

During the third quarter of the Žalgiris game, the American import slipped on the floor during a hard drive towards the basket. He had to be assisted by his teammates off the court after he fell.

A recent medical diagnosis revealed that R. Sulaimon had severely damaged the ligaments of his left ankle.

"Treatment of this injury is somewhat complicated by the fact that he suffered an ankle ligament sprain for the first time in his career. Currently, the most important thing to do is to control the swelling of the leg, which in the initial onset is much greater than subsequent sprains. As soon as the swelling subsides, we will start rehabilitation and try to get Rasheed back on the field as soon as possible," said Wolves team physiotherapist Gintarė Katkutė-Lackė.

The star guard has been averaging 18.3 points, 2.9 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 18.9 utility points in seven (7) games played in the Betsafe-LKL Championship.

He logged per-game numbers of 20.2 points, 5.4 assists, 3 rebounds and 18.6 RRP in the five (5) BKT EuroCup matches he played.

BC Wolves score major victory against league-leading Zalgiris
BC Wolves score major victory against league-leading Zalgiris

On Sunday evening, the BC Wolves (8/1) of Vilnius became the first team to win against the defending Lithuanian champions in Betsafe-LKL's 31st season.

The Kęstutis Kemzura-coached team defeated Žalgiris Kaunas (8/1) to the score of 75:64 (17:14, 13:19, 22:12, 23:19) on their home court, and are currently spotless while playing in Vilnius since their move to the nation's capital.

The hosts started strong by employing a tough defensive effort right off the jump ball as it took almost six (6) minutes for Žalgiris to register points in the game. After the first quarter, the Wolves were ahead 17:14. However, towards the end of the second quarter, Žalgiris managed to catch up and took a slim advantage heading into the second half - 33:30.

After halftime, the guests kept their pace to keep the score at 40:32, but the Vilnius team ramped up their play in the third quarter 20:5 and finally regained the upper hand - 52:45. Unfortunately, the Wolves lost one of their star players to injury in the third quarter - Rasheed Sulaimon appeared to hurt his leg after slipping on the floor and did not return to the game.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Wolves extended their lead to double digits (69:59). Zalgiris tried to chip away at the deficit (69:64), but Kristupas Žemaitis and Vaidas Kariniauskas each nailed a three-pointer to ensure the victory for the Vilnius-based club.

In this game, Kaunas played without Tomas Dimša, who suffered a minor groin injury, while Jeffery Taylor was still not able to suit up for the Wolves.

8,522 fans showed up to watch the game at the Avia Solutions Group Arena.

As of this writing, the league's Big Three have lorded over the tournament's standings with identical slates - aside from the BC Wolves and Žalgiris, BC Rytas of Vilnius also has eight wins with one loss.

BC Wolves: Rasheed Sulaimon and Vaidas Kariniauskas (6 rebounds) 15 each, Tre'shawn Thurman 14, Adas Juškevičius 9, Eigirdas Žukauskas 8, Kristupas Žemaitis (9 rebounds) and Djordje Gagič 5 each, Regimantas Miniotas 4. Christian Mekowulu, Arnas Beručka, and Vitalijs Kozys all went scoreless.

Zalgiris: Nazareth Mitrou-Long 15, Laurynas Birutis 11, Brady Manek 9.

He replaces Justina Meškevičiūtė, who has been performing said functions for more than a year. Instead, J.Meškevičiūtė will continue to be part of the club's activities as she handles the implementation of international projects for the Wolves.

"First of all, a big Thank You goes to Justina, who previously agreed to take on the role of team manager at the beginning of the club's development. Thanks to her, all management processes for the team were created and presided over. She will now continue her work with the club and help us in international waters.
